Looking back, I suppose you could say my career as an artist began when I was three. One afternoon my older brother (7 years my senior) brought home from school an eye-catching colourful array of paper card squares. He was adamant that I shouldn’t even think about touching them. However, for a 3 year old, such temptation was impossible to resist. The coloured cards just begged to be decorated, which I proceeded to do, successively scribbling nonsensical shapes in multi-coloured crayons on them one by one. When he discovered my “improvements”, he was rather cross to say the least.

In time, my brother found it in his heart to forgive me. In my early years of primary school, he would demonstrate to me how to draw outline images of cars, boats and trucks. I would watch intently as he displayed simple ways and methods to construct these images. One day not long after, my primary school teacher announced to the class that we would have “free drawing” where we could choose to draw whatever we like. This was my chance, I thought, to put into practice everything my brother had taught me. I still remember the teacher and students being highly impressed with my ability which was extremely encouraging. This confidence boost set the stage for the beginnings of what would become a lifelong passion for art.

I eventually moved on from the cars, boats, trucks (but not necessarily the coloured squares). These days I work as a sculptor, painter, animator and live sketch artist, turning my eyes and hands to whatever happens to fall into my lap.
